Overview - Placeholders in image and document names

Your software will create names for some documents and directories automatically. For instance, the first image that your software acquires will be named Image_01, by default. You can change this automatically created name at any time.

What are placeholders?

Your software supplies you with a number of placeholders that you can use in names. Placeholders are identified by angle brackets. Place holders in names will be replaced by special values, the <Date> placeholder stands for the current date for example.

Using placeholders in a name

Use the All Options dialog box to use placeholders in the image names which are automatically created when the image is acquired. A description of this dialog box can be found here.

You can specify whether images are automatically to be saved after their acquisition. Use the Customize Subdirectory Name dialog box, to use placeholders in a directory name. A description of this dialog box can be found here.

Editing placeholders

Most placeholders can be configured. Therefore, you can choose from a number of date or time formats. To configure a placeholder, select the placeholder and click the Modify button.

Note: Not all of the placeholders are relevant to all software versions. The most important placeholders are listed here.

<Separator>

The <Separator> placeholder separates the individual parts of the name from each other. By default, the _ sign is used as a separator sign. You can, however, also use a space or a hyphen.

Should you want to select another sign as a separator, shift the placeholder <Separator> to the Selected properties column. Select the placeholder and click the Modify... button.

<Counter>

The counter stands for a number that your software automatically counts up.

You can manually set the numbering back to the start, or select an automatic mode. To do this, shift the <Counter> placeholder to the Selected properties column. Select the placeholder and click the Modify... button. You can find more information on counters here.

The <Counter> placeholder must be included in an automatically produced image name. This is why the Remove button will not be available when you have selected this placeholder.

In an automatically created directory name however, you do not need the counter.

<Date>

The <Date> placeholder stands for the current day's date. Use this placeholder to have the acquisition date automatically adopted in the name.

You can choose between various date formats. To do this, shift the <Date> placeholder to the Selected properties column. Select the placeholder and click the Modify... button.

<Time>

The <Time> placeholder stands for the current time. Use this placeholder to have the acquisition time automatically adopted in the name.

You can choose between various time formats. To do this, shift the <Time> placeholder to the Selected items column. Select the placeholder and click the Modify... button.

<Author>

The <Author> placeholder stands for the user who acquired the image. The name supplied will be the name under which the user is logged-on in the operating system.

<Observation Method>

The <Observation method> placeholder refers to the position of the camera and indicates whether the camera is mounted at the bottom or the side of the transmission electron microscope.

<Magnification / Camera Length>

The <Magnification / Camera length> placeholder refers to the magnification or the camera length that was used during the acquisition of the image. When you are using the Imaging imaging mode, the magnification is shown as part of the image name. When you use the Diffraction imaging mode, the camera length is shown as part of the image name.

<High Voltage>

The <High Voltage> placeholder refers to the voltage that the transmission electron microscope used during the acquisition of the image.

<Microscope Frame>

The <Microscope> placeholder refers to the model of the microscope that is connected.

<Imaging Mode>

The <Imaging Mode> placeholder refers to the imaging mode that the microscope used during the acquisition of the image.

<Camera Name>

The <Camera Name> placeholder refers to the model of camera that was used during the acquisition of the image.

Placeholders for directory names

For automatically created directory names you can use the same placeholders as for automatically created image names. For directory names there are other additional placeholders.

<Subdirectory>

This placeholder makes it possible for you to save the images in a complex directory tree after their acquisition.

The directory which you define here in the Customize Subdirectory Name dialog box, is always a subdirectory to the directory which was defined in the Acquisition Settings > Saving dialog box as the destination for all acquired images.

Use the <Subdirectory> placeholder if you would like to create another subdirectory beneath this directory. For example, you can have the images you have acquired on different days automatically saved in their own individual directories.

Note: The placeholder may not be positioned at the top of the Selection column. If it is, then you will not be able to close the Customize Subdirectory dialog box with OK.

You can find step-by-step instructions on how to define a subfolder here.
