Ultimate Erode Dark

Use this filter to erode a dark object either to one single dark pixel or to a dark line. You'll find the Ultimate Erode Dark filter in the Process > Morphological Filter menu.

Before using the filter

This filter can only be applied to binary images. Therefore you have to first binarize the image by using the Image > Mode > Binary... command. Otherwise, in the menu for morphological filters, the Ultimate Erode command is grayed out. You can find more information on binarizing here. Subsequently, you can invert the contrast with the Process > Invert... command, since the Ultimate Erode Dark filter expects black objects on a white background.

Resulting images

The result of such an ultimate erosion is a binary image.

Settings for the filter

The dialog box that is opened when you use an image processing operation is made up in the same way for every operation. Click here to switch to a description of this dialog box.

Application

The reduced information can, e.g., be used to count dark objects.

Exactly what happens?

When the Ultimate Erode Dark filter is applied, erosions follow one another, until one more erosion would create a white image. Dark areas are reduced to a single pixel or to lines.
