Working with morphological filters

Application

With the Dilation filter you can carry out the following tasks:

You can fill out small holes and inclusions in objects. Filling holes is a prerequisite for a successful object separation with the Separate Objects morphological filter.

You can even out small irregularities on the edges of objects.

Settings for the Dilation filter

Here, you can find information on how you can set the shape and size of the morphological filter.

The dialog box that is opened when you use an image processing operation is made up in the same way for every operation. Click here to switch to a description of this dialog box.

Exactly what happens?

The Dilation filter enlarges objects by adding to pixels on its edges. The filter determines the maximum gray value within the set neighborhood of a pixel and replaces the central point with this value.

The illustration demonstrates the way the dilatation works for a 3x3 neighborhood. On the left, you see the source image, and on the right, the resulting image. After the filtering took place, the holes disappeared. The object's area was, in the process, enlarged.

Comparison with other filters

The dilatation is a significant element of the Open and Close morphological filters.
