In an image, drawing objects or image segments can have been selected. Use the Edit > Deselect command or the [Ctrl + D] keyboard shortcut, to delete an existing selection in the active document.
Drawing objects
To select drawing objects, click the Selection Tool 
button in the Toolbox toolbar.
Image segments
To select one or more image segments, click the Marquee Tool 
button in the Toolbox toolbar.
