Median filter

Use the Process > Smoothing Filters > Median... command to smooth the image.

The dialog box that is opened when you use an image processing operation is made up in the same way for every operation. Click here to switch to a description of this dialog box.

Exactly what happens?

The Median filter is a smoothing filter from the class of rank filters. It removes isolated, faulty pixels. Constant intensity ranges near the point remain unchanged. The treated image does not, therefore, lose any of its original sharpness.

The intensity value of a pixel and its eight neighbors will be arranged based on size. The middle - fifth value - will be assigned to the center pixel. Extreme intensity values are always positioned at the first and last position within the hierarchy and are therefore never assigned. They disappear from the image. Thus, point shaped noise will be suppressed and minor irregularities will be smoothened.
