Lowpass filter

Use the Process > Smoothing Filters > Lowpass... command to suppress high space frequencies. Thus, noise will be filtered out and strong contrasts in the image will be smoothened.

Exactly what happens?

The Lowpass filter transmits low space frequencies as accurately as possible. Low space frequencies generally contain the image information. High space frequencies are, as a rule, image noise and are suppressed.
